Ferrari 250 GTO Sells for Mind Boggling Huge Amount!

An American man has bought a Ferrari 250 GTO  for an automotive record. In June this year, the 250 GTO sold for $70m USD which is equivalent to about $94.5m AUD. Certainly this is a mind boggling amount, isn’t it! As a point of reference, the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany sold in 2014 for $158m AUD.  For almost double the price, you could have afforded an entire 154-turn 20.8km racetrack. Marcel Massini a prominent classic Ferrari expert believes that in the near future we will see a Ferrari 250 GTO sold for over $100 million USD ($135m AUD). That price is the equivalent of  3000, 2018 6cyl Holden Commodores!

“I am confident that within 5 years, we will see a Ferrari 250 GTO sold for over $100 million” – Marcel Massini

Tell me about this Ferrari 250 GTO

Serial No. 4135GT Source: Top Gear

The 250 GTO (pictured) rolled out of Maranello in 1963 with serial number 4135GT. Ferrari only made 36 examples of the car making it a rare collectible in later years. The silver compact  prancing horse possesses a V12 engine, producing over 300HP. This particular example finished 4th in the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans, and won the Tour de France Automobile in 1964. This 250 GTO hung up its racing steering wheel many years ago and has passed among collectors until it sold for this record price. If you’re lucky, you might see it showcased at prestigious automotive events soon.

Who is the owner?

The lucky, or should I say “wealthy” new owner of this Ferrari 250 GTO is said to be WeatherTech founder David MacNeil. MacNeil is an avid collector of classic cars, but I am sure the newest acquisition will be front and center.

Who knows what the future will bring. The previous record was also held by a Ferrari 250 GTO sold in 2014 for just under $40m USD. Therefore I agree with Marcel Massini that we will see a 250 GTO (or another car) sold for over $100m in the near future.
